The Black-eyed hermit crab is the largest (and most adorable) species of hermit crab encountered in the Pacific Northwest. Their favourite shells to live in are those of the Lewis’ moon snail. These two species are often encountered in similar habitats, including eelgrass beds, mudflats, and sea pen gardens.

This patch is inspired by a photograph of a Black-eyed hermit crab I met at Clover Point in Victoria, B.C.
